All decisions are inherently future oriented. The future under discussion may be as close as the next few minutes. For instance, "Should we stay at the party longer or go home now?" Other times, shared decision-making looks ahead to the distant future. "Should we aim to travel to Africa in five years if we can save enough to take a month off from our jobs?" The size of the decision doesn't necessarily match the size of the argument it can start off; the suggestion of leaving a party may threaten to start a bigger row than leaving for Africa!
